Mitsubishi's New Eclipse
There's a new Mitsubishi Eclipse, it's called the Eclipse Sportback EV, and it's a fully battery electric vehicle built on the same platform as the next generation Nissan Leaf. Remember, Nissan and Mitsubishi are in an alliance where they share technology and, in some cases, platforms.
The new Eclipse Sportback EV was recently shown online; it's likely going to be a 2027 model-year car. That means it should be on sale by the summer of 2026.
This is Mitsubishi's second battery electric vehicle for North America. Mitsubishi is looking to introduce significantly refreshed new vehicles each year through 2030.
The Eclipse Sportback EV and Outlander PHEV are the company's electrified vehicle choices. Mitsubishi’s 2030 plan is defined by four key points:
- A path to electrification
- A path to a renewed and expanded product line-up that will strengthen Mitsubishi Motors in North America
- A path to a modernized retail sales model
- A path to network expansion and sales growth
The Eclipse Sportback is good-looking; you can kind of see the Leaf resemblance, especially from the rear, but it doesn't look like an identical copy. It looks like its own thing. Mitsubishi says:
“The sporty electric subcompact SUV will feature unique front and rear fascias that echo other vehicles in Mitsubishi Motors’ global lineup, distinct front and rear lights and lighting signatures, striking and sporty alloy wheels and, of course, the brand’s iconic Triple Diamond branding.”
One thing Mitsubishi has going for it - most people who shop for a Mitsubishi vehicle end up buying one. Many owners online think highly of Mitsubishis, often referring to them as "reliable," but others complained of expensive parts due to the limited dealership network.
Price will be one of the big determiners as to the new Mitsubishi eclipse sport back success. Like the Leaf and many other new electric cars coming out today, it probably needs to be well under $50,000, maybe even around $40,000. The leaf starts under $30k, although just barely. Still, both the Nissan Leaf and this new Mitsubishi are affordable electric cars.
