Ford Fathom - $30,000 Electric Pickup



Ford has officially pulled the cover off its newest EV – well, they’ve revealed the name, anyway. The Fathom is a midsize electric pickup aimed squarely at affordable EVs like the Slate truck. However, Ford has much deeper pockets than Slate and already has an in-place sales and service mechanism, and the Fathom comes with more standard features.  

The price for the Ford Fathom is $29,945, putting it under the $30,000 mark the company has been promising for about a year.  


Ford CEO Jim Farley says, “We are confident that we have the best cost platform and are focused on the right market. We believe the UEV platform will be a strategic advantage, and we have the best chance to make it work.”


He's probably right. If Ford can deliver this price with Toyota-like reliability, Ford could be unstoppable in the U.S. Ford also appears focused on delivering the features buyers use. Every Fathom will come standard with a large touchscreen, Apple CarPlay, Android Auto, digital key functionality, bidirectional power capability, and BlueCruise-ready hands-free highway driving. 


Perhaps more important than the truck itself is what sits underneath it. The Fathom is the first vehicle built on Ford's new Universal Electric Vehicle Platform, an architecture designed to reduce complexity and manufacturing costs while supporting future electric models. Ford believes that formula will help it compete not only with traditional rivals, but also with Tesla and a growing wave of affordable EVs. Ford has even taken the extra step of reducing the number of fasteners and structural parts, thereby cutting manufacturing costs and production time. 


Ford has yet to reveal the truck's final production design, but the company says the five-passenger pickup will offer generous interior space and will begin reaching customers in 2027. If Ford can rapidly apply what it’s learned from the F-150 Lightning, the Fathom could be a winner. Should pricing hold, execution matches the promise, the Fathom could become for electric trucks what the Maverick was for compact pickups: the vehicle that makes an entire segment accessible again

Affordable Fuel Sippers

Used cars like this 2016 Toyota Corolla LE are a great choice for a fuel-efficient, affordable car. Updated April 2026 Don't let high gas prices convince you to get a new car just to "save money." Sure, you might save money at the Chevron station, but if that new car results in an $800 per month payment, then how are you actually "saving" money? You're not. If people are serious about using less gas and fewer resources, then just driving something used, like a 10-year-old Toyota Corolla, is great. Non-hybrid versions of the Nissan Altima and Honda Accord come close to 40 MPG highway.  Used hybrids are good too - look at a used Toyota Prius c (50MPG), Hyundai Elantra Blue (54MPG), or a Honda CR-V Hybrid (38MPG). The prices are incredible. Here are just a few examples: CarGurus - in New Jersey, a 2023 Nissan Leaf with 21,000 miles for $10,000 Capital One Auto Navigator - in Atlanta, a 2023 Mercedes-Benz EQE 350 4Matic Sedan with 46,000 miles - $33,000. This was an $80,000 car when new!!  Cars.com - in Dallas, a 2024 Kia Niro EV with 11,000 miles - $20,000.  All of these cars, and others just like them, will still be under warranty. Mercedes-Benz has a 10-year, 155,000-mile warranty on some EVs. Most electric cars have an 8-year / 100,000-mile warranty on the battery and drive components.
