The Mercedes-Benz CLE 450 is a Work of Art
The Modern E-Class Coupe
What was once known as the E-Class Coupe has evolved into the CLE, but even in its previous form it shared plenty of its DNA with the smaller C-Class. The CLE serves as a combined replacement for both the old E-Class and C-Class two-door models
The new CLE blends the best traits of both. It delivers the upscale feel and road presence buyers expect from an E-Class while maintaining the agility and athletic character that made the C-Class fun. Based on the CLE’s price, I assume there’s some cost advantage too – the CLE 450 4Matic Coupe starts around $70,000.
Straight Six Power
Mercedes offers the CLE with several powertrain choices, but the CLE 450 4Matic is the one to have. It’s powerful in a way that only a straight-six can be. It’s also a mild hybrid. The hybrid assistance isn't there to transform the car into a Prius-like fuel sipper. Instead, it adds bursts of torque, improves efficiency, and makes the entire driving experience feel more refined. The electric starter/generator also keeps accessories running (like air-conditioning) during stop/start operation.
From behind the wheel, the CLE 450 is balanced. It's sporty enough to be entertaining on a winding road, yet never so aggressive that it becomes tiring during a daily commute. The steering is responsive, the ride remains composed, and the cabin stays quiet even at highway speeds. The CLE 450, and even more so the AMG version, feel like a Porsche 911 rival, but the Porsche is sharper and more expensive. If you want a car that is ready for track duty many weekends each year, get the Porsche 911 – any version will do. But if you will rarely, if ever, attend a local track day, get the CLE 450.
Exterior Design
The styling deserves special mention. The CLE manages to look elegant and athletic at the same time. Long doors, a sweeping roofline, and clean proportions give it a timeless appearance that stands out without trying too hard. It's the kind of design that will still look good years from now. Many Mercedes-Benz vehicles are like this.
Buyers can personalize the CLE extensively. Options such as the rich red leather interior transform the cabin from luxurious to genuinely special. Packages like the Engineering Package and Driver Assistance Package add another layer of technology, convenience, and capability. Whether your priority is comfort, performance, or cutting-edge features, there's a configuration that can make the CLE feel tailored to your tastes. The Engineering Package includes adaptive suspension and four-wheel steering.
C-Class and E-Class all in One
In the past, the E-Class Coupe and Convertible had more in common with the W204 C-Class. Then, for the C238 E-Class from 2017 – 2023, Mercedes’ two-door models were based on the larger E-Class platform (sometimes called MRA).
The current CLE kind of combines the C-Class and E-Class into a single model. Both coupe and convertible styles share the modular rear-architecture (MRA II) platform, designed to accommodate longitudinal internal combustion engines and plug-in hybrids.
Today, the CLE 450 succeeds because Mercedes understands the mission. It's not trying to be a hardcore sports car, and it's not simply a luxury cruiser. Instead, it occupies the sweet spot in between, offering style, comfort, performance, and everyday usability in a very attractive package.
